“Here we are,” Alicia said softly. “Welcome to your new home.”
“Thank you.” Gregory knew what was usually expected – that he and Alicia adjourn to their room and consummate their new union. Their situation was unusual; Jason, as the eldest son, was the one whose bedroom activities hold rather more importance to the estate and the family. Gregory was only here to provide funds.
“Gregory.” Alicia stepped in closer, near enough that the heat of her body warms Gregory’s chilled fingers. “Would you like to go to bed?”
Gregory tried to answer and was unable to muster up more than, “If you like.”
“I can sleep in another room, if you wish.” Alicia reached out. Her hand hovered over Gregory’s shoulder before resting, light as a feather, on the curve of Gregory’s neck. “You’ve hardly said a word tonight.”
“You as well,” Gregory said, leaning into Alicia’s touch. Her thumb was just barely brushing Gregory’s skin. It had been an age since anyone offered Gregory more than a handshake when before he had been free with expressions of affection. Alicia’s hand was warm, even through Gregory’s cravat and shirt. “You don’t have to sleep in another room.”
“You would not prefer it?”
“I hate being alone,” Gregory said, surprising himself with the honesty of his reply.
Alicia smiled very briefly and carefully leaned in to press her lips chastely to Gregory’s. She was clearly unpracticed at kissing, hesitant and unsure. Gregory knew more than he ought of physical love, and kissing in particular was an area in which he excelled. He felt, suddenly, that he ought to show Alicia what to do, and so he hooked his hands into Alicia’s vest to pull her in.
